Do You Know How to Use Your Office Chair Adjustments?

Close-up of the levers and tilt-tension dial on an adjustable ergonomic office chair.

That chair has 7 adjustments. How many are you using?

Here’s something we see almost every day in the showroom: somebody sits down in one of our chairs, and we start showing them how the lumbar support works.

Blank stare.

They didn’t know the lumbar support on their chair at work could move.

It’s not their fault. Nobody hands you an instruction manual and a tutorial when you buy an office chair. You get a box, a few hex keys, and good intentions.

Most people set the height once, maybe kick the recline back a little, and call it done. Meanwhile, there’s a whole chair’s worth of adjustments sitting there unused, and a back that’s paying for it by 3 o’clock every afternoon.

What We’re Actually Adjusting

When we sit you down for a chair fitting, here’s what we’re dialing in:

Seat height: Your feet should rest flat on the floor, with your knees at roughly a 90-degree angle.

Seat depth: You want about two or three fingers of space between the edge of the seat and the back of your knees.

Lumbar support: It should sit comfortably in the curve of your lower back, not above it or below it.

Armrests: The height and width should allow your arms to rest comfortably without pushing your shoulders toward your ears.

Tilt tension: You want enough resistance that leaning back feels supported, not like you’re about to go over backward.

Some chairs offer even more adjustments, but none of this is complicated once somebody shows you what everything does. That’s the whole idea.

Why a Proper Chair Fit Matters

Think about the last time you bought a good pair of shoes. You probably didn’t grab the first pair in your usual size and walk out. You tried a few on, walked around the store, and paid attention to how they felt.

A chair is no different. The trouble is, a poor chair fit does not always make itself obvious on day one. It may show up as a stiff neck by Wednesday, a lower-back ache around hour six, or shoulders that keep creeping toward your ears without you noticing.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you bought a bad chair. It may simply mean the chair was never properly adjusted for you.

The first step is finding the right chair for your body and the way you work. Some people need more recline. Some prefer a firmer seat. Some need different proportions or stronger lumbar support.

That part is like trying on shoes. Once you find the right chair, adjusting it properly is what makes the chair pay off. Skip either step, and you’re leaving comfort on the table.

Come Sit in Some Chairs

If you’re shopping for an office chair, come in and try a few. We’ll help you find one that fits your body, your workday, and your budget.

We’ll Give You an Office Chair Fitting!

Once you find a chair you like, we’ll show you how to use its adjustments and help you dial everything in before you take it home. You won’t leave wondering what that mysterious lever underneath the seat is supposed to do.

Just kicking tires? That’s fine too. Pull up a seat and see what a properly adjusted office chair is supposed to feel like.
